Tesla Motors unveiled its much-anticipated all-electric two-seater roadster. The lithium-ion battery powered sportscar features a 248hp (185 kW) electric motor that accelerates the car from 0 to 60 in four seconds.Built by Lotus for Tesla, the Roadster has a range of about 250 miles and a top speed of 130 mph.
The custom-designed battery system (Energy Storage System) weighs in at close to 1,000 pounds and uses commodity lithium-ion cells. The system addresses thermal balancing with a liquid cooling circuit.
The 3-phase, four-pole motor uses a low resistance “squirrel cage” with large copper end rings. This allows the rotor to develop high current flows and torque, with low resistance losses. The use of a small air gap allows tight inductive coupling which, combined with low loss magnetic materials, enables the development of high torque at high rpm. Together, these factors allow the induction of large currents, even at high rpm, producing much flatter power and efficiency curves from approximately 2,000 rpm to 12,000 rpm. The motor redlines at 13,500 rpm.

Pocos carritos de golf aceleran de cero a 100 en 4 segundos, llegan a los 210 Km/h o recorren 400 kilómetros con una sola carga y este coche tiene el encanto adido de que los nios no te sealan por la calle por conducir un vehículo parecido al papamóvil pero sin cristales.
El problema del coche es precisamente ese, que tiene pinta de convertirse en el juguete los nuevos ricos de Silicon Valley. Esos que al lado del Roadster de Tesla aparcan un Ferrari, un Hummer o, directamente, un tanque. Queda muy bien para ir al trabajo, da un toque New Age, pero para divertirse de verdad los fines de semana es mejor fundirte unas cuantas acciones de la compa?ía en gasolina. Hablamos, después de todo, de un coche que tiene que parar y enchufarse a la red eléctrica durante tres horas y media cada 400 kilómetros.
